  • There’s a lot going on in Downtown Detroit this summer. While the beach at Campus Martius (one of PPS’s proudest projects to date) is in full swing, the city also unveiled a new pedestrian plaza next to the iconic Spirit of Detroit statue. The 20,000 ft² civic square–which will host live events and is currently equipped with tables and chairs, new lighting, and colorful sidewalk art—will go through a 90-day trial this summer to see how pedestrians and traffic respond to the new public space.
  • crowdsourcing project in Brownsville, Brooklyn is using technology to make the community the expert. A collaboration between the City of New York and CoUrbanize, the program involves posting signs in public spaces, like vacant lots and subway stations, asking locals to text in ideas for the space. Says CoUrbanize Cofounder Karin Brandt, “the first step is asking residents questions they can answer without industry jargon.”
  • In 2015, when Oslo decided to be Europe’s first city to ban cars from its center, there was a strong backlash from local businesses and car owners. A year later, the City has a new solution: to ban parking. To be rolled out in three phases, this more gradual but equally radical plan holds that by 2019, all 650 downtown parking spots will be transformed into shared public spaces such as playgrounds, bike lanes, and seating areas.
  • And speaking of public space… let’s share it, guys. (This made us laugh). The Spanish capital of Madrid is the latest city to crack down on the “manspreading” epidemic on public transport.
