The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the discourses and trends in Higher Education Institutions expressed by such concepts such as engaged scholarship (Boyer, 2006), community-based research (Strand et al, 2003), community-university research partnerships (Hall, 2009, Hart et al 2007), community-university engagement (Watson, 2006), civic engagement (University of Victoria strategic plan), or knowledge mobilization and knowledge impact (Levesque, 2008)?  What are the driving forces behind or within these trends?

A project funded by the European Commission within the aegis of the Lifelong Learning Programme provides some interesting resources in the field of adult education and lifelong learning.

European InfoNet Adult Education, co-ordinated by Catholic Federal Association for Adult Education (Katholische Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft für Erwachsenenbildung), Germany provides information about some current developments in adult education in European countries and at the EU level.

U21 - Research Universities and Regional Engagement

The report on the inaugural meeting of the U21 group concerned with Research Universities and Regional Engagement, held at the University of Melbourne in February 2010 has been warmly received by U21, and the initiatives outlined therein are being encouraged.  A lot of support was expressed for the work colleagues have proposed,  and U21 is happy that this should now be a Collaborative Group of the organisation.

PASCAL to Assist Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Wisconsin-Illinois Auto Region

The Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce announced today a 5.9 million dollar grant to the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater for a multi-year, collaborative initiative that will support innovation and entrepreneurship in a six-county region in Wisconsin and Illinois.

The initiative builds on strong collaborations that have emerged among six colleges and universities, regional economic development agencies, local authorities, and both state governments.
