Hume Library International Library of the Year

The Hume Learning City Library at Craigieburn has been  named the International Public Library of the Year by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions at the World Library and Information Congress in Lyon France.Craigieburn is the second Global Learning Centre developed by Hume City Council in Melbourne Australia with the LIbrary the centrepiece of the Centre.

Are Successful Learning Cities Always Entrepreneurial?

There has been considerable development of the concept of the Learning City in recent years as cities have sought to address a myriad of challenges. This has usually involved in successful cases a good deal of innovation ,at times with entrepreneurial initiatives, particularly in social areas and with partners such as universities.

Sustainia 100 reports

A useful source of innovations that often involve entrepreneurial action may be found in the annual Sustainia 100 reports. These reports give 100 selected innovations across 10 sectors. The sectors are cities, energy, food, IT, education, health, resources etc. There are 10 selected innovations in each sector. Browsing these you may find good examples of entrepreneurial action you can follow up on.

Barcelona as European Capital of Innovation

Barcelona has been selected as the first European Capital of Innovation "for introducing the use of new technologies to bring the city closer to citizens. The new Capital of Innovation award looks at the outstanding achievements of cities building up an innovation ecosystem "ie a system which links the citizens (People) with a built environment (Place) and public organisations and policy makers (Public) and through business (Private). The award went to Barcelona for "introducing the use of new technologies to bring the city closer to citizens".

Cork EcCoWell International conference – key addresses

The city of Cork recently hosted an international conference to follow up the initiative by the city to explore how the EcCoWell ideas developed by PASCAL under the PIE program might be implemented in Cork. EcCoWell  is directed at holistic and integrated approaches to city development that progress beyond the silos often found in cities.

The Irish Minister for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock, spoke at the conference and offered comment on the EcCoWell aspiration.  Closing remarks at the conference were given by Pat Ledwidge. The text of both addresses are available below and attached.

Bad Tölz Learning Region Case Study

I recently posted a note about the Cork and Limerick Lifelong Learning Festivals in the context of an article by the co-ordinators of both festivals in the current issue of the Irish Adult Learner 2013 journal. My note mentioned that Bad Tölz in southern Germany has conducted very successful learning and health festivals for some years. Information on the Bad Tölz festivals is now available in the attached short paper by Denise Reghenzani-Kearns and Romina Prudent.
