100 Smart Cities to be funded in India
The Indian Government announced in June 2014 that 100 Smart Cities will be funded in India at a cost of US$1.2 billion.in cities with populations over 100,000 people. The program aims to improve methods for engaging citizens and addressing their needs, building capacity in cities and progressing e-governance through the use of technology..
Unlike China, the Learning City approach has not taken off in India so that it is of interest that the Indian Government is now investing in the Smart City approach. While there are a number of common areas between Learning Cities and Smart Cities (depending on how Smart Cities are defined), the need still exists to clarify the similarities and differences between Learning Cities and Smart Cities so that ways in which learning strategies can support Smart City initiatives can be recognised in policy development. The Entrepreneurial Learning City Network includes the Smart City concept in their program so perhaps some progress can be made in this way.

Smart Cities idea catching on
The Smart City idea seems to be catching on also in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Yesterday I read in The National that the Singapore and the UAE are embarking on smart city cooperation.
