The question has been posed, 'Why have several volumes of Skills@Work have been dedicated to Regional and Local Economic Development (RLED)'? This is a very good question, because it takes one to the essence of the problematical situation in South Africa, namely our high unemployment rate, and particularly the problem faced by many out-of-work young South Africans who, given the demographics of South Africa, consist mainly of black youth.

Colleagues within the Robert Owen Centre at the University of Glasgow have recently been awarded a major grant by Research Councils UK within the Newton Fund to fund collaborative research and innovation between the UK and Chile on the topic of educational and labour market trajectories of secondary Technical and Vocational Education graduates in Chile.

The mandate to all countries in the world is clear: we need concerted efforts, action and investments towards a low carbon, resilient and sustainable future.
