New Regional Office for PASCAL in South Africa

On 2 June 2010, Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal of the University of Glasgow, in the presence of the South African High Commissioner to the UK, Dr Zola Skweyiya, the South African Honorary Consul in Scotland, Brian Filling and Professor Michael Osborne, Co-director of PASCAL, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of South Africa (UNISA), establishing a fourth regional office of PASCAL.

U21 - Research Universities and Regional Engagement

The report on the inaugural meeting of the U21 group concerned with Research Universities and Regional Engagement, held at the University of Melbourne in February 2010 has been warmly received by U21, and the initiatives outlined therein are being encouraged.  A lot of support was expressed for the work colleagues have proposed,  and U21 is happy that this should now be a Collaborative Group of the organisation.

PASCAL to Assist Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Wisconsin-Illinois Auto Region

The Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce announced today a 5.9 million dollar grant to the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater for a multi-year, collaborative initiative that will support innovation and entrepreneurship in a six-county region in Wisconsin and Illinois.

The initiative builds on strong collaborations that have emerged among six colleges and universities, regional economic development agencies, local authorities, and both state governments.

PASCAL effective Interventions in Youth Unemployment (PIYU)

The PASCAL programme on effective interventions in youth unemployment is a developing programme offered to members of PASCAL International Observatory.

Unemployment, especially youth unemployment, is a major concern in many regions.  Youth unemployment is always 2-3 times higher than adult unemployment and tends to continue to rise for a while following the end of a recession.

Universities and regions: engagement for regional development

Issues of policy and practice arising from the PASCAL PURE programme.

This paper highlights issues of policy and practice for securing effective engagement between regional authorities and universities to enhance regional development.  It draws particularly on experience reported in the 17 regions in different parts of the world taking part in the Pascal PURE programme to offer practical suggestions for regions and universities to apply within the particular contexts in which they find themselves.
