An Open Letter on Open Innovation

The following is an “open letter” to the readers of the PASCAL website.  This follows my reading of a white paper (Open Innovation 2.0: A New Paradigm) composed by Martin Curley and Bror Salmelin, which I shared in a posting on 15 July.

Open Innovation 2.0

The attached paper was shared at an Open Innovation 2.0 Conference in Dublin, Ireland.  The title of the conference was "Sustainable Economy & Society -- Stability, Jobs, Prosperity".

This white paper offers a helpful way to think about creation after the recent phase of "destruction" wreaked by the economic down turn.

International Resident Scholar at Northern Illinois University

Northern Illinois University, located outside of Chicago,  has welcomed its second international resident scholar.  Ilpo Laitinen, Director of Administration at the city of Helsinki and Lecturer at the University of Lapland is completing research comparing the structure of learning networks in Helsinki and Chicago.  Laitinen is looking at the inclusion of community stakeholders as regions move forward in sustainable economic initiatives.  Chicago is home to some of the most well-known community organizations including those of Jane Addams, Saul Alinski and John

PIE Futures - Towards a Vision for Learning Cities 2020

This paper has been prepared to encourage discussion of future directions for the PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE) project beyond the PASCAL Cities Learning Together Conference in Hong Kong in November 2013. A set of eight possible objectives for the future are discussed in the paper.

Collective Intelligence Wellbeing Conference Workshop and Methodology

I have attached a preliminary report of our collective intelligence wellbeing conference workshop, where we focused on the design of a new national wellbeing index for Ireland.  I have also attached a report of our collective intelligence work from last year, where the lack of a national wellbeing index was identified as a significant barrier to wellbeing in Ireland.

PASCAL Director to Address 2013 Global HR Forum in Seoul - 7 November

We are happy to report that Professor Michael Osborne has been invited to be a speaker at this year's Global HR Forum in Seoul, Korea at the request of the Korean Ministry of Education. He will contribute an address with the forum's theme of Lifelong Learning in the Centennial Era - For the Happy Third Age.
